Bleary-eyed at 06h00, Canon Alex Gordon and eight leaders from Junior Church and the Youth Groups, set off by rail or car for the three-hour journey to Zurich, for an inspirational day of training in children’s and youth ministry, led by Rev Mary Hawes, the Church of England, National Children and Youth Adviser for the Church of England. Using a text from Zechariah and in interactive sessions, she teased out and stressed the importance of: inter-generational involvement; listening to children themselves and their questions about God, the Bible; empowering children in worship and elsewhere; allowing them to make mistakes; including them as equal partners in the community; helping parents to recognize their own vital role in passing on their faith and giving them the encouragement, confidence and tools to assist them. And much more. Rev Hawes will come back again. If you are a parent, or leader – don’t miss it! The day was full of thought-provoking questions and practical tips and advice.
